Darzoo Biography

Darzoo was born in Munich, Germany in 1971.  Both of his parents were artists and encouraged his artistic talents from a very early age.  At the age of three, he and his family moved to Iran, which was his parents’ native country.  While in Iran, his passion for artwork developed and he began painting more seriously. At the age of ten, Darzoo illustrated a book on Armenian history, which was published.  At sixteen he was hired as a graphic designer for the kids’ page in “Alik” Armenian Press.  In 1988, he entered Azad University of Tehran, winning the second place in the national Illustration competition of art students a year later.  In 1990, he became a freelance political cartoon designer for three major magazines in Iran and had his first group show for his paintings in Tehran.  Two years later, Darzoo had his first solo show of Illustrations entitled, “Art of Dro” in Tehran.

He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Graphic Design in 1994, the same year that he entered his two years of mandatory military service in Iran.  In 1995, he was hired by the most well known animation company in Iran (Saba) as a character designer and layout artist.  His love of cartoons flourished, when in 1997 he published a cartoon in Italy and Turkey while he was a freelance artist working for several
major companies.  In 1999, Darzoo not only did a series of illustrations for books and calendars based on Iranian historical heroes, but also made a bronze map masterpiece for the museum of “Vank” in Esfahan, Iran and also made a bronze sculpture memorial for the presidential office in Iran.  A year later, he left Iran for Austria and stayed until 2001, when he moved to the United States.  Darzoo now lives in Southern California where his work is being celebrated and included in many gallery shows.
